BSM 5-a-side

The fifth annual Big Scary Monsters 5-a-side football tournament kicks off at 2pm this Saturday at the London City Powerleague venue. 24 teams made up of bands (Tall Ships, Talons, The Xcerts, Shapes, Hold Your Horse Is and more), labels (XL, Wichita, Hassle, Alcopop and of course, BSM), magazines (Rock Sound, Punktastic, Drowned In Sound, The Fly) and a number of others (including Last.fm, Red Bull, Banquet Records and BBC) will all come together to face off for the most heralded sporting prize in music!

This years event is raising money for for the Bobby Moore Fund (part of Cancer Research), with the aim of aiding research and helping raise awareness of bowel cancer, the third most common cancer in the UK. Many of the teams involved in the tournament have played their part by donating their time and efforts to the good cause with the release of a 17 track compilation, launch gig for the tournament and a number of online auctions, set to run next week.

This Friday (17th June) BSM take over the Old Blue Last in East London with The Xcerts, Hold Your Horse Is, Rosa Valle and a very special, secret guest all playing live, as well as DJ sets from Talons, Alcopop and Punktastic. The show is free entry and on til 1.30am. Everyone will have the option of donating to the charity during the night and the venue are very kindly offering a percentage of their upstairs bar takings. On sale that night, via the label webstore and through Banquet Records, will be a special compilation CD featuring 17 bands from the BSM roster and their friends. The CD costs £5 and comes in a die-cut wallet inside of a cardboard slipcase whilst the digital version is available from http://bsmrocks.bandcamp.com at any price you would like to donate. 100% of the proceeds from both formats go to the charity. The CD (which is also available with an exclusive t-shirt from the label) includes lots of new, unreleased, rare and generally massive tracks from the likes of Tubelord, The Xcerts, Tall Ships, Brontide, Tangled Hair, Three Trapped Tigers, Johnny Foreigner, Shapes and loads more. As well as this, BSM have made a number of different four-for-the-price-of-two CD and vinyl bundles available online, each containing a copy of the afore mentioned compilation, again with 100% of that money going to charity, and will be running a number of online auctions to win some really awesome prizes, after the tournament.
